Gender
Gender refers to whether a noun is masculine, feminine, common or neuter. Masculine — boy Feminine — girl Common (refers to either male or female) — Example: child
Neuter — (refers to nouns without life, they are neither male or female) Example: book.
Many Masculine nouns are changed to feminine nouns by adding ‘ess’ Masculine Feminine prince princess priest priestess actor actress author authoress
Increasingly non-specific gender is used for example: ‘actor’ and ‘author’ may be used for both masculine and feminine gender. “Authoress” is now rarely used to refer to a female writer instead she is also called an ‘author’.
