          Phonemic Segmentation & Substitution

                            Phonemic Segmentation

During Phonemic Segmentation children learn to

identify the number of  phonemes in a word:

1.Have children clap for each phoneme in a word.

                                          /c/   /a/   /n/

                 2. Let children blend single phonemes:

You say: /d/ /o/ /g/      children say: dog

                 3. Allow children to stretch out words to hear

individual phonemes in one syllable words:

                         rrrrrrrrrr/aaaaaaaaaaa/nnnnnn

                                                r/a/n

                               Phonemic Substitution

Call a word and let the children tell you the

                beginning sound.

                                            hug

Ask them to substitute b, m and r

                                 bug, mug, rug

This activity can be done with ending sounds as

               well.

                             bug   rug  substitute n

Those are the vital phonemic awareness skills that

every beginning reader must learn, as long as they

are taught well children catch on quite quickly.
