Phonograms are fun because children enjoy the entire process of trying to find different onsets (consonants) to fit the rimes (phonograms).

For example: ack (Phonogram) back, rack (onsets b and r). Children will manipulate and try out different consonants, they will come up with real words and nonsense words. Even when they come up with nonsense words they are still learning as the sound of the consonant used is being reinforced. Phonograms are fun because word families consist of rhymes and wherever there is rhyme there is rhythm and children love rhythms. That makes phonograms a valuable part of phonics instruction.
