Follow blending by introducing two and three letter sight word and then long vowels. Long Vowels a—cake e—seed i—kite o—slope u—rule
Consonant blends Consonant blends may consist of two or three letters.
Have children sound out each letter and put the sound together for Consonant blends. Provide ample amount of words for each blend. Always say the words of the blend louder than the rest of the word to make a clear distinction. st(loud) op(softer)
Where possible use pictures for each blends and have the children do matching activities. Children can use lines to match pictures to words on worksheets or match pictures on cards to the corresponding word card. Encourage students to call the words aloud as they do matching activities. Activities that can be used for words that don't lend themselves to pictures are:
Tracing the blend in the word as you call them or after you call them. choose Do fill in the blend activities: fr cr --om --y
Note: Do one blend at a time. Once children have learned at least three to five blends you can mix them up. Call several words with the same blend and have students pick out the odd one. from front cry frame Write down the words so that children can associate the sound with letters and words.
