                                  TEACHING READING

                                              Choosing Books

Choosing the correct book is essential. None of us like to read books on topics

of which we have no interest. Sometimes it is necessary. Even so reading at

those times becomes a chore. Book selection should be geared towards

      their interests of the child.

                                   The five finger test

      1.  First have the child choose a book he or she would like to read.

      2.  Let the child open the book somewhere in the middle.

     3.  Now let them read aloud.

     4.  Every time the child comes to a word they don't know, let them hold

    one finger up.

     5.  If all five fingers are up before they get to the end of the page, the book

is too difficult for the child right now.

If the book is too hard and the child wants to hear the story

anyway, read along with them or to them.
