How to teach the Dolch words

The Dolch words should be put on flashcards. You can also create a word

wall in your classroom. Parents should be encouraged to create a word wall

      at home.

Flash cards can be created using construction or cartridge paper and

a marker. Simply cut the paper into small rectangles, write the words,

hold them up and have the child call them. You can also type them and

print them out on the computer.

Start off by flashing five or ten words, watch how the children

progresses to see how fast you can go. The Dolch words are to be learned

over a period of time. Allow children to set the pace and exercise patience.

I color code my Dolch words, on flashcards and on the wall, meaning I write

some in blue, some in green, some in red etc for the different levels. You can

use any color you would like. Here is a list of the Dolch words divided into the

     five levels.

                                           Keeping it interesting!

You can use the Dolch word list for some good old fashioned Bingo!

You can also use cotton to make "wool words" out of the sight words. Here's

      how to make wool words:

Write the word on some paper, for example: "all" use glue and cotton to

outline the word. This is fun for children and provides a concrete tactile

approach to learning sight words. After you have created enough wool

words, you can blindfold the child and have them touch a word and guess

what it is, by running their hands over it.
