                                             Fluency

Fluency is developed when children read aloud often. Here are some specific strategies to help children develop fluency.

 

Echo Reading

 

Echo reading is modeled reading. The adult sets the example for tone and pronunciation.

 

 Adult reads:

"Look Jane is coming," shouted Michael. Jane didn't look happy to see them.

 

Child/Children read:

"Look Jane is coming," shouted Michael. Jane didn't look happy to see them.

 

                                            Choral Reading

Children read aloud at the same time. This type of reading gives confidence to some reluctant readers but may intimidate others who can't keep up. This is a great time to assess children's self confidence and to build it with positive comments.

 

                                         Act it out

Have children act out certain scenes using the dialogue from the book. The children can play different characters.

 

                           Read it again and again

Let children read their favorite stories aloud again and again. Children especially the younger ones love repetition.

 

                               Tape Assisted Reading

Record yourself reading a story and have students listen and read along in their books. There are several books on the market that come with tapes, so they can be bought if you find it too tedious to make them.

 

                                      Partner Reading

This is a highly effective strategy. I've seen it work many times. Letting a weak reader find a partner who is a strong reader to read aloud with is effective and no one loses. The child who assists another usually takes great pride in the others accomplishments. Of course with any kind of tutoring or mentoring you have to try to make the matches as compatible as possible this is the only drawback. Once this hurdle is crossed, partner reading works.
