TEACHING READING
Phonemic Awareness Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to identify individual phonemes (sounds) in words. Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound in a word. Phonemic awareness can be developed in students through Phoneme substitution and segmentation, blending, Phoneme isolation. It is to be noted that older children and adult non-readers have little or no phonemic awareness. Therefore phonemic awareness is an essential skill for any beginning or struggling reader. Phonemic Isolation During Phonemic Isolation children learn how to identify beginning, and ending sounds. Have children listen to a word: bag Ask them what sound they hear at the beginning. Let children repeat several words after you and tell you the beginning sound: cat, ball, tank etc Allow children to identify the ending sound in three letter words and the ending sounds of three to five letter words. Ending Sounds pig, boat
