Phonics R controlled Vowels
ar—far er—brother ir—first or—fork ur—turn Tell children that when r follows a vowel it makes it give a different sound. The r controls the vowel. Call a group of words: bat, cat, fat
Have the children listen to the words with the r sound at the end instead of the t sound and hear the difference. bar, car, far
Provide a list of words with different r controlled vowels: purse, fork, bird, start Let the children call them and then circle the two letters that show the r controlled vowel.
Find pictures of words with the r controlled vowels and let children paste them in their notebooks and write the words under them.
