                                                        R controlled Vowels

 ar—far      er—brother      ir—first    or—fork    ur—turn

Tell children that when r follows a vowel it makes it give a different sound. The r controls the vowel.

     Call a group of words:

                                     bat,  cat, fat

Have the children listen to the words with the r sound at the end

instead of the t sound and hear the difference.

                                 bar, car, far

Provide a list of words with different r controlled vowels:

                                  purse, fork, bird, start

Let the children call them and then circle the two letters that show the r

    controlled vowel.

Find pictures of words with the r controlled vowels and let children paste

them in their notebooks and write the words under them.
